Made In Britain Concept Video

For my collection concept video I wanted to create more of a mood or feeling rather than a planned story. I decided to feature a range of vintage looking imagery such as birds in mid-flight, fabrics, a male walking (to ensure a view knows it is for menswear) along with a few background scenes including the skyline at different times, woodland textures and rockery.
In terms of shot I wanted to use a diverse selection of camera angles such as close up's,

My choice of song was chosen due to its whimsical feeling, I liked how it gave a relaxed feeling to the video. Although the song it pretty modern and sang by a teenage boy his voice has a very vintage feel to it fitting in with my.

King Krule - Baby Blue.
For my opening shots I used a still image that I have used in my portfolio, the image features smoke clouds and a man’s leg that has being mirrored.
The next shot was a clip I had recorded of the sun setting, it was a beautiful pinky sky which matches many of my portfolio pages (almost resembling smoke), as well as being a direct link to aviation/flight. I then shot a group of flying birds landing on an old looking building, the reason I did this was to portray this theme of aviation through my video and garments, however I did not want it to be quite as literal as recording a plane, instead I stuck with the theme of flight.
To change from shot to shot I used the dissolve technique, I liked how it was a subtle change rather than the images just changing really quickly.
My next series of shots were based on texture, I included a lot of natural fabrics such as leather hides and fur. This was because of the British Racing brief, we were to use vintage/natural fabrics. I have features the fabrics in tonal blues as my colour story is blue (my garments will also be blue shades). I used eye – level shots for this clips as I wanted to keep the filming quite natural alike to the textures.
Continuing with the flight theme I then filmed small birds however this time the birds are trapped in a small metal cage, by switching between the bird clips to the tree’s I think it adds emotion as the birds should be free& flying.
Keeping with the outdoor theme I then inserted a clip of sunlight hitting a series of metal steps, the sunlight is very bright and once again adds the idea of nature being involved in my design research.
These shots were filmed as a point of view shot, creating the feel that the viewer themselves are looking up at the tree’s or walking along side the metal railing with the sun hitting their face.
From the blue colour story to green natural earthy tones, I featured a clip of a male walking in a vintage tweed coat, I reversed the clip in time to the music to create something a little different, I used a slightly higher speed for this section as well as the model being an age of the target audience for Made in Britain.

The map clip is to symbolise aviation again, as I have features a lot of map backgrounds in both my designs and portfolio. The short section with the Polaroid camera is just to add something a little different to the film rather than just textures and feelings. I plan to use Polaroid’s within my final shoot therefore linking each of my projects directly.
I used a few cutaway shots during this section of the video as the male was walking away then reversed creating quite a interesting look, I also timed this to fit the flow of the music.
As I had previously used a section of clips with the birds and sky I wanted to create almost and opening and closing scene therefore I continued with the bird clip yet involved small sections of reversing the clips in time to the music before it slowly dwindling out to the end credits.

Overall I kept quite a slow and steady pace to the film as I wanted to make the view feel relaxed as casual as the garments themselves shall be. I am very happy with how my film has turned out and believe it do create the mood and feeling I was hoping for, therefore I have achieved what I aimed to do.

Made in Britain; Concept Video

Mind Map of initial idea's ; Also in sketchbook.
Mood Board for the concept film, showing the overall theme/mood that I wish to achieve.
| VIDEO IDEAS |
-          Vintage, Old Looking/ Retro
-          Old Props such as bird cages, Scrunching up fabrics, Vintage photographs
-          Man walking away in stop start motion, coat on and off, reversed video.
-          Sections indoors and outdoors, birds in cages.
-          Oversized, heavy garments, feeling of being trapped?

Theme: Is the theme vintage, modern, quirky, how can you describe it and link it to the collections and/or website.
Vintage, almost like an old fashioned film. Dusky filters as well as light colours.

Mood: How does it make you feel when you are watching the video? Can you describe the emotions it portrays?
Quite relaxed and free, more about the mood than a specific structure. Contrasting emotions of birds trapped and man free.

Music: What style of music is it and can you link it to the collection?
Light, soft music nothing to loud or harsh, maybe something slightly classical.

Setting: Where is it set, is it indoors, outdoors, is in in urban setting or countryside? Is it in a busy space or an abandoned derelict area?
A blend of derelict places such as rundown fields/empty building with some being filmed inside e.g. scrunching fabrics, old photographs lay on tables.

Garments: Can you link the garments to an era or a specific style. Are the garments their collection or are they vintage? Or is it customised.
Charity shop, I may buy vintage looking blazers to throw/hang on and off objects/model. Faux fur collar to add the idea of aviation.

Colour: Are the colours bright, dull, monochrome, bold?
Pastel, light tones making it feel vintage and whimsical. By scrunching fabrics up and letting them fall back naturally I can use fabrics shade I plan to create the garment out of e.g. blue/grey velvets.

Lighting: Is the lighting harsh or soft, are images projected onto props or models, if so what are they?
Natural lighting with subtle hints of sunsets/cloudy skies (idea of flight to continue aviation theme). Could try some projecting techniques?

Content: What is the video based on, is there a story (narrative) within the video? Does it link to the collection, if so how?
No exact story more just stop start/ loose feeling abstract video clips. A mash of all things that inspired me whilst designing the menswear suit.

Imagery: Is there any imagery that links to the collection or such prints or patterns? Does any of the imagery relate to the overall story?
Polaroids? To add a vintage feel, could project images onto a face but may do that for Under the Microscope intead.

Model: How does the model reflect the collection or the brand?
Not showing faces more shots from far away and from the back, I want to film to be more about the mood and context than a specific model/theme.

Styling: What is the make-up and hair like, is it a specific style or dramatic?
Natural, just plain ordinary man to fit with the brief I have designed for.

Timing: Is the pace slow or fast, has it been speeded up.
Slow pace, just as if watching a film. Maybe adding a few stop/start shots with parts rewound.

Text: Is there any, if so how is it used within the video. What style of font has been used? Does it reflect the mood of the collection?
Not a lot of text, maybe just the collection name at the end. Plain white/pastel colour in a subtle smart text.

Props: Do they have any, if so are they props subtle or a bold statement, do they make a statement? Do they have animals in the video, this could relate to your sport?
Subtle natural props, e.g a vintage suitcase of chair nothing to drastic. I’d rather keep focused on the mood and overall tone than specific features within the shots.

Prints: Are they used within the backgrounds or projected, do they link to the collection?
The use of printed old maps to continue that idea from my portfolio and branding.

Accessories: Are there any hats, bags, helmets, watches, jewellery, shoes, glasses etc, do they relate to the theme?
Maybe just simple manly accessories such as a hat or bag.

Story Board for Video before starting to shoot.
Next I will begin to shoot clips of my film to then edit them next week.

Reviewing Other Concept Video's; Jasmin Shokrian

Theme: Is the theme vintage, modern, quirky, how can you describe it and link it to the collections and/or website.
This fashion film is quite whimsical and has a summer feel about it. All of the shots look quite vintage and light which allow quite a feminine feel. Items of the collection are worn during the film which allows not only to showcase the collection items but an overall ‘loose’ / almost bohemian feel to the film and collection itself, the film was shot in LA but not with all the hustle and bustle, a more calmer version of LA.

Mood: How does it make you feel when you are watching it. Can you describe the emotions it portrays?
I feel summery and almost as if I could ‘float away’ whilst watching this film, I think the mood is very dreamy and light as if you don’t have a care in the world (maybe advertising how the clothes could make you feel like this). I think the era would be 40’s/50’s with a vintage calming feel.

Music: What style of music is it and can you link it to the collection?
The music used it quite vintage and repeated in small section throughout, almost like a record player stuck on the same section of a song. However this stuck music is quiet and relaxed making me feel relaxed as a viewer.

Setting: Where is it set, is it indoors, outdoors, is in in urban setting or countryside? Is it in a busy space or an abandoned derelict area?
A mixture between indoors and out, almost as if we as a view are just watching a normal girl spend a day around the house, doing not a lot in particular but looking content with life. Although it does have quite an urban feel in certain shots such as sun kissed palm trees and neutral garden settings.

Garments: Can you link the garments to an era or a specific style. Are the garments their collection or are they vintage? Or is it customised.
The garments are particularly feminine from the pink tonal shades mixed with whites and creams, with silent shot of a pastel roses slowly swaying, almost reminds me of the English rose idea, or as if we are getting ready for a garden party.

Colour: Are the colours bright, dull, monochrome, bold?
All of the colours are very light washed and bright giving a very sleek, girly feel to the video. Pastel shades are used throughout the whole film which are currently on trend for summer to, making the whole collection seem on trend.

Lighting: Is the lighting harsh or soft, are images projected onto props or models, if so what are they?
All of the lighting seems very natural and as if the film has been recorded on a beautiful sunny day were no false lighting was needed. The film looks asif a filter has been used on it to give this dreamy, calm feel to it.

Content: What is the video based on, is there a story (narrative) within the video? Does it link to the collection, if so how?
The story is based on the female model, she seems as if she is waiting for somebody or something yet is in to rush to get it. This could be promoting the garments as relaxed as well as smart and sleek. Lounging around in the casual pieces but by adding a pleated skirt it instantly looks ready for a party showing how diverse the garments/styles outfits are.

Imagery: Is there any imagery that links to the collection or such prints or patterns? Does any of the imagery relate to the overall story?
In terms of print and pattern everything is kept quite plain and sophisticated, there are no bold patterns or prints shown within the video or the garments themselves.

Model: How does the model reflect the collection or the brand?
The female model has distinct hair, this being a bold contrasting orange shade, I think it shows that pastel shades/ this clothing can be worn no matter what your style or personality. However in terms of age I would put the model in her late teens/ early twetys therefore promoting this brand to that age group more so. I think she looks very ‘preppy’ and ‘fresh’ almost as if she’s just left college/university and is evolving / developing her own sleek style.

Styling: What is the make-up and hair like, is it a specific style or dramatic?
Very plain, yet statement make up with the very well defined eyebrows however the rest of her makeup is simple and natural. Her hair is a statement by colour but naturally swept back from her face, once again looking effortlessly done.

Timing: Is the pace slow or fast, has it been speeded up.
The timing is just a normal pace, as if we are watching it live. Just natural to match the garments and styling.

Technique: Have they used any special techniques such as stop frame animation?
There are no stop start frames or animated shots. Just quite vintage, kind of like a old vintage movie.

Text: Is there any, if so how is it used within the video. What style of font has been used? Does it reflect the mood of the collection?
The text is white in strong capital letters yet slightly rounded which creates a relaxed looking font yet stamen none the less as the white particularly stands out over the video frames.

Props: Do they have any, if so are they props subtle or a bold statement, do they make a statement? Do they have animals in the video, this could relate to your sport?
Although there is a statement beach ball in one shot, most of the props are very subtle such as a plain white chair or vintage staircase, just items that blend naturally into the background / frames.

Prints: Are they used within the backgrounds or projected, do they link to the collection?
There are not any statement or bold patterns/prints, on the garment nor the within the framed video shots either.

Accessories: Are there any hats, bags, helmets, watches, jewellery, shoes, glasses etc, do they relate to the theme?
In terms of accessories, there are bold black sunglasses as well as skin tonal shoes. Nothing statement or to add a contrast though, just simplicity creating a natural and delicate overall feeling.

"Je pars habiter Ă  Los Angeles," reads the graphic T-shirt that opened Jasmin Shokrian's Spring lookbook. The French phrase—translated: "I'm going to live in Los Angeles"—succinctly summarized her idea for the season. "All eyes are on L.A. in a way that I've never seen before. Everyone has this fascination with the city these days," said Shokrian, who grew up in Southern California and is still based there. "I wanted to express that there are many more layers to L.A. than what you see on the surface." While that T-shirt was the only item in the lineup that directly conveyed the City of Angels theme, the new collection did have a more casual vibe than usual. The laid-back West Coast lifestyle was best exemplified by several light-wash chambray pieces, as well as trompe l'oeil jersey dresses screened with geometric shapes, one of the designer's preoccupations. Other highlights included a knife-pleat poplin skirt, architectural sack dresses cut from a stretchy poplin viscose, and pretty organza caftans made for lounging poolside. Shokrian's clothes are a reminder to East Coasters like us that it's not all terry sweatsuits out there.

Reviewing Other Concept Video's; Fendi

Theme: Is the theme vintage, modern, quirky, how can you describe it and link it to the collections and/or website.
The theme in this video is very characterised and quirky, the bag and bag charms that are being advertised are the most featured product in the short film, as if they are finger puppet characters (that bag charms have small faces on each with a different emotion). I think the fashion film has a very homemade feel about it even though Fendi is a quite highly priced designer brand.

Mood: How does it make you feel when you are watching it Can you describe the emotions it portrays?
The film makes me feel almost childlike, I think it is very fun and creative yet advertises the products well by almost creating a story around each bag charm. I think there is something very ‘cute/sweet’ about the whole mood of this film.

Music: What style of music is it and can you link it to the collection?
The music used is very retro almost circus like, it is quite upbeat and exciting, as if you are waiting for something fun to happen. The music reminds me of children’s adverts or television programmes. The tone of music changes depending on the ‘Buggies’ characteristic’s and image shown in front, for example when the ‘bag buggie’ is under the sea, the music is made to feel almost muted as if you are under the sea personally. The is also small sections of nursery rhymes played during the female ‘bag buggie’ section as well as reference to the Moulin Rouge.

Setting: Where is it set, is it indoors, outdoors, is in in urban setting or countryside? Is it in a busy space or an abandoned derelict area?
The set is indoors in a vintage/retro looking home, with homemade screens/pop up scenes, almost as if you are playing with a pop-up book with a child. The setting is changed by the use of each screen but the overall background remains the same, this being the home wallpaper & lighting on the dressing table.

Garments: Can you link the garments to an era or a specific style. Are the garments their collection or are they vintage? Or is it customised.
The use of garments is quite subtle, the female model is wearing just a plain t-shirt to keep all the attention focused on the ‘bag buggies’, the is also an almost aggressive looking bag at the end but in terms of actual garments the only one featured is the plain T-shirt as the ‘buggies’ are bag charms.

Colour: Are the colours bright, dull, monochrome, bold?
The colour theme is quite retro, with the use of vintage tones and primary colour’s such as mustard and burgundy.

Lighting: Is the lighting harsh or soft, are images projected onto props or models, if so what are they?
The lighting is very crisp and exact, there is not a certain light highlighting a certain section just the whole advert is well lit. I think the two lamps either side of the screens are to give the illusion that they are lighting the whole ‘buggie show’, therefore lighting the advert, once again creating a very retro and homemade feel.

Content: What is the video based on, is there a story (narrative) within the video? Does it link to the collection, if so how?
I don’t think there is one consistent story, more about what the ‘buggie’s’ personalities are shown in small stories/sequences. I believe this is to advertise a certain ‘buggie’ to a certain consumer with similar personality traits (for example romantic, funny, interesting) inspiring the consumer to buy something that could be considered personal to them, just in a less obvious way than having their name embossed on a bag.

Imagery: Is there any imagery that links to the collection or such prints or patterns? Does any of the imagery relate to the overall story?
The use of still imagery would be the backdrop scenes used to create a story with the bag charms. This does relate as is the main narrative and overall story.

Model: How does the model reflect the collection or the brand?
There is not a model as such, in terms of faces etc. all we really see of the model is their hands. By not showing what sex the model (although the hands look quite feminine) it could allow the consumer to know that the products is not aimed directly towards a particular gender. I do think the ‘bag buggies’ could easily be unisex.

Styling: What is the make-up and hair like, is it a specific style or dramatic?
For model styling the viewer does not see the face or hair, the only styling is the plain navy t-shirt. I think this is purposely done to show that an outfit can be completely made by an exciting choice of bag. After all the advert is promoting just bags and charms, not a complete collection.

Timing: Is the pace slow or fast, has it been speeded up.
The speed of the advert is consistent and keeps an almost relaxing rhythm, just as if you are watching a short novelty show at home.

Technique: Have they used any special techniques such as stop frame animation?
Not in this advert no, they have kept it very simple but effective, almost like a homemade family video, captured by chance.

Text: Is there any, if so how is it used within the video. What style of font has been used? Does it reflect the mood of the collection?
The only text used is ‘Fendi Bagbuggies’ wrote in italic almost childlike text at the very end just to allow a consumer to identify the brand and collection.

Props: Do they have any, if so are they props subtle or a bold statement, do they make a statement? Do they have animals in the video, this could relate to your sport?
The whole advert is mainly props from fans, to lamps and drop screens (almost flash card looking). Although they are not overstated the props keep a very distinct feel, quirky feel to the advert.

Prints: Are they used within the backgrounds or projected, do they link to the collection?
No prints are used other than an old looking printed wallpaper used as a home/living room backdrop.

Accessories: Are there any hats, bags, helmets, watches, jewellery, shoes, glasses etc, do they relate to the theme?
The only accessories shown are the promoted products themselves (these being the ‘bag buggies’ and one handbag).

Made In Britain; Final Illustration

For my final illustration I didn't want to create a block looking image, therefore I hand drew/painted a male figure of a man I could imagine wearing my garments. Once I had drew my figure out I used pastel coloured watercolour paints to achieve a relaxed washed out look. I then scanned my sketch in and used illustrator to sketch around certain aspects of the man's face, just to add detail. I then copied this into photoshop and began to digitally add paint/dye swatches and a small smoke effect. I feel my illustration adds a mood to collection, making it feel almost calm and sophisticated in terms of neutral colours and natural tones.

Overall I have enjoyed looking into menswear and stepping out my comfort zone to create designs and garments for the opposite sex. I think it takes a completely different mind set to design for a male body as they are so different to a females. As well as this men do not purchase so much throwaway fashion as women do, they buy quality therefore the standard of my garments are much higher.
I think I have learnt a lot for the Made In Britain brief& enjoyed looking into all elements of menswear fashion.

Made In Britain; What is trending?

Whilst completing the Made in Britain brief, looking into current menswear trends& high end collections was a ongoing study. This was to enable myself as designer to gain inspiration & know if my Made in Britain designs would actually fit in/sell to my target audience. Whilst researching I could gain idea's based on the many shapes, colours, trends and statement pieces within menswear.
In terms of colours, menswear is kept quite classic with just slight hints of colour, nothing to much. Examples of this would be neutrals such as white, cream, grey, black & navy. Very popular colours for the previous seasons were also statement blue, raisin/marroon shades &mustard tones.
(images via; StyleCab
A popular (& one of my favourite's) trend for A/W13 was tonal blocking;
(images; Casely Hayford AW14)
As well as extremely oversized garments such as jackets, coats & jumpers;
(images; Topman AW13)
Other popular tends included; Sports trims, Fabric Blocking, Winter florals, Parka jackets, Lots of leather, Chunky knits, Vintage shades of green & red as well as dropped shoulder detailing and layering.
In terms of designers/collections as few of my favourites &inspirations were;

| Sandro Menswear |
I really enjoyed looking in detail at menswear fashion as I think it can be a little overlooked sometimes, I find it particularly interesting in how its the little details and touches that make a suit or jacket different and allows it stand out from the crowd. I am pleased with my design as I believe I have took quite a few trends into my personal designs such as, oversized shapes, dropped shoulder elements, small details to enable high finished as well as my chosen colour pallet, I have used natural shades of blue, grey and neutral whites/creams.

Made In Britain; Final Bag Photoshoot

As I have created my bag out of quite neutral & natural coloured fabrics I wanted to keep this theme within my accessory photo shoot, to do this I decided on a 'woodland/natural earth' background. I really liked how the cream leather really stands out against the earthy tones.
Showing in detail my BRC swing tag.
