Made In Britain Concept Video

For my collection concept video I wanted to create more of a mood or feeling rather than a planned story. I decided to feature a range of vintage looking imagery such as birds in mid-flight, fabrics, a male walking (to ensure a view knows it is for menswear) along with a few background scenes including the skyline at different times, woodland textures and rockery.
In terms of shot I wanted to use a diverse selection of camera angles such as close up's,

My choice of song was chosen due to its whimsical feeling, I liked how it gave a relaxed feeling to the video. Although the song it pretty modern and sang by a teenage boy his voice has a very vintage feel to it fitting in with my.

King Krule - Baby Blue.
For my opening shots I used a still image that I have used in my portfolio, the image features smoke clouds and a man’s leg that has being mirrored.
The next shot was a clip I had recorded of the sun setting, it was a beautiful pinky sky which matches many of my portfolio pages (almost resembling smoke), as well as being a direct link to aviation/flight. I then shot a group of flying birds landing on an old looking building, the reason I did this was to portray this theme of aviation through my video and garments, however I did not want it to be quite as literal as recording a plane, instead I stuck with the theme of flight.
To change from shot to shot I used the dissolve technique, I liked how it was a subtle change rather than the images just changing really quickly.
 My next series of shots were based on texture, I included a lot of natural fabrics such as leather hides and fur. This was because of the British Racing brief, we were to use vintage/natural fabrics. I have features the fabrics in tonal blues as my colour story is blue (my garments will also be blue shades). I used eye – level shots for this clips as I wanted to keep the filming quite natural alike to the textures.
Continuing with the flight theme I then filmed small birds however this time the birds are trapped in a small metal cage, by switching between the bird clips to the tree’s I think it adds emotion as the birds should be free& flying.
Keeping with the outdoor theme I then inserted a clip of sunlight hitting a series of metal steps, the sunlight is very bright and once again adds the idea of nature being involved in my design research.
These shots were filmed as a point of view shot, creating the feel that the viewer themselves are looking up at the tree’s or walking along side the metal railing with the sun hitting their face.
 From the blue colour story to green natural earthy tones, I featured a clip of a male walking in a vintage tweed coat, I reversed the clip in time to the music to create something a little different, I used a slightly higher speed for this section as well as the model being an age of the target audience for Made in Britain.

The map clip is to symbolise aviation again, as I have features a lot of map backgrounds in both my designs and portfolio. The short section with the Polaroid camera is just to add something a little different to the film rather than just textures and feelings. I plan to use Polaroid’s within my final shoot therefore linking each of my projects directly.
I used a few cutaway shots during this section of the video as the male was walking away then reversed creating quite a interesting look, I also timed this to fit the flow of the music.
As I had previously used a section of clips with the birds and sky I wanted to create almost and opening and closing scene therefore I continued with the bird clip yet involved small sections of reversing the clips in time to the music before it slowly dwindling out to the end credits.

Overall I kept quite a slow and steady pace to the film as I wanted to make the view feel relaxed as casual as the garments themselves shall be. I am very happy with how my film has turned out and believe it do create the mood and feeling I was hoping for, therefore I have achieved what I aimed to do.

Made In Britain; Final Illustration

For my final illustration I didn't want to create a block looking image, therefore I hand drew/painted a male figure of a man I could imagine wearing my garments. Once I had drew my figure out I used pastel coloured watercolour paints to achieve a relaxed washed out look. I then scanned my sketch in and used illustrator to sketch around certain aspects of the man's face, just to add detail. I then copied this into photoshop and began to digitally add paint/dye swatches and a small smoke effect. I feel my illustration adds a mood to collection, making it feel almost calm and sophisticated in terms of neutral colours and natural tones.

Overall I have enjoyed looking into menswear and stepping out my comfort zone to create designs and garments for the opposite sex. I think it takes a completely different mind set to design for a male body as they are so different to a females. As well as this men do not purchase so much throwaway fashion as women do, they buy quality therefore the standard of my garments are much higher.
I think I have learnt a lot for the Made In Britain brief& enjoyed looking into all elements of menswear fashion.

Made In Britain; What is trending?

Whilst completing the Made in Britain brief, looking into current menswear trends& high end collections was a ongoing study. This was to enable myself as designer to gain inspiration & know if my Made in Britain designs would actually fit in/sell to my target audience. Whilst researching I could gain idea's based on the many shapes, colours, trends and statement pieces within menswear.
In terms of colours, menswear is kept quite classic with just slight hints of colour, nothing to much. Examples of this would be neutrals such as white,cream,grey,black & navy. Very popular colours for the previous seasons were also statement blue, raisin/marroon shades &mustard tones.

A popular (& one of my favourite's) trend for A/W13 was tonal blocking;

As well as extremely oversized garments such as jackets, coats & jumpers;

Other popular tends included; Sports trims, Fabric Blocking, Winter florals, Parka jackets, Lots of leather, Chunky knits, Vintage shades of green & red as well as dropped shoulder detailing and layering.
In terms of designers/collections as few of my favourites &inspirations were;

I really enjoyed looking in detail at menswear fashion as I think it can be a little overlooked sometimes, I find it particularly interesting in how its the little details and touches that make a suit or jacket different and allows it stand out from the crowd. I am pleased with my design as I believe I have took quite a few trends into my personal designs such as, oversized shapes, dropped shoulder elements, small details to enable high finished as well as my chosen colour pallet, I have used natural shades of blue, grey and neutral whites/creams.

Made In Britain; Final Bag Photoshoot

As I have created my bag out of quite neutral & natural coloured fabrics I wanted to keep this theme within my accessory photo shoot, to do this I decided on a 'woodland/natural earth' background. I really liked how the cream leather really stands out against the earthy tones.

Made In Britain; Calico Bag Prototype

By creating a prototype of my bag design in fabric I could gain a realistic feel of the bag would be and make any changes to wherever was needed. The are several things I am going to change after completing this prototype these being;
- Side panels need to be longer.
- Strap width needing to be smaller.
- 4 D rings instead of 3
With this I now have the correct measurements and idea's to create my paper pattern and begin constructing my final bag.
SIZES
front & back | 52cm x 42cm
straps | 5cm x 80cm
base | 42cm x 10cm
sides | 52cm x 10cm
In terms of fabrics I am using a faux leather and grey velvet as well as silver toned D rings and a black zip.
The back piece and straps of the base will be cut in the velvet and the rest in faux leather to create not only colour contrast but texture to.

Made In Britain; Meeting with Chris

In preparation for meeting with the client (Chris) I had completed a technical drawing for each of my designs. Keeping one technical drawing with just outline and another with fabric swatches/colour, I then joined each of the pages making a portfolio to share.

With the feedback from Chris it was decided to bring two of my designs together, creating a much more bulky and oversized jacket meaning it would suit a larger target market.
I am going to include a oversized faux fur collar, paper bag style pockets to match my bag design along with a slight side fastening to even out the fur collar, aswell as making the jacket waist length compared to the original floor length designs. I'm sticking to my original colour theme of grey and blue (mainly light blue). This is the new technical drawing for my design.
